'Ca. Phytoplasma mali' causing apple proliferation

'Ca. Phytoplasma mali' causing apple proliferation

Characterization, diagnosis and management of phytoplasmas: 35-58

Apple proliferation (AP) is the most important phytoplasma disease of apple (Malus domestica). The causal agent 'Candidatus Phytoplasma mali' and related strains are members of 16S ribosomal RNA group 16SrX, subgroup A (16SrX-A). AP severely affects apple production, primarily in Europe. The disease is readily transmitted by grafting or by vector insects. Diseased trees show a loss of apical dominance, a typical brooming shape, produce small and unmarketable fruits.
