Maximal oxygen uptake in four species of small mammals

Pulmonary gas exchanges have been measured by a closed circuit method in four species of rodents at rest and during maximal exercise periods of one to two minutes on a motor-driven treadmill. Measurements were performed at temperatures of 30°, 6°, 3° and 10°C on warm- and cold-acclimatized mice, rats and guinea pigs, and in hamsters acclimatized to and running at 29°, 26° and 6 °C. As the animals were indiscutably exhausted by the heavy exercise imposed, the values obtained for the oxygen uptake rate, O2, were considered as maximal. Cold-acclimatized animals being more resistant to lower temperatures gave the highest values of O2 in exercise. The influence of the ambient temperature on maximal O2 differed among species.
