Pest Watch: Tomato Hornworm (Manduca Sexta), Tobacco Hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata)

Pest Watch: Tomato Hornworm (Manduca Sexta), Tobacco Hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata)

Horticulture 105(5): 14

Information on the biology of tomato hornworm (Manduca sexta) and tobacco hornworm (M. quinquemaculata), symptoms of infestation, and control of these pests is provided. These large sphinx moth caterpillars eat the foliage of garden plants in the family Solanaceae--generally tomato, although occasionally eggplant and pepper--and also attack related ornamentals. Their ranges are wide and overlapping; however, tomato hornworm is generally more common in the North, and tobacco homworm tends to be more common in the South.
