Predatory activity of Daphnia magna on the free siwmming stages of Schistosoma mansoni and on infection of Biomphalaria alexandrina with Schistosoma mansoni miracidia

The effect of Daphnia magna on S. mansoni miracidia and cercariae and its role as an interfering factor in the infection of B. alexandrina snails with S. mansoni miracidia were studied. The data revealed that 10 specimens of D. magna/60 ml water consumed 91.7% and 74% of S. mansoni miracidia and cercariae, respectively. The present results indicated that the susceptibility of B. alexandrina to infection was significantly reduced when the snails were exposed to miracidia after 1/2 hour of adding miracidia to Daphnia regardless the water volume used (250, 500 and 1000 ml) or the density of Daphnia (5, 10, 20, 40 and 100 animals). Also, a significant decrease in cercarial production was in snails that were infected in the presence of Daphnia. either when snails were added simultaneously to miracidia and Daphnia (487 cercariae/snail) or after 1/2 hour of exposing Daphnia to miracidia (444 cercariae/snail), compared to the controls (1673 and 2200 cercariae snail. respectively)
