1.1. Rectal gland function was examined in the stingray Dasyatis sabina and compared with that in the shark, Squalus acanthias.2.2. The gland weight in proportion to body weight is 0·00024 in Dasyatis vs. 0·0006 in Squalus. The maximum flow of rectal fluid is 0·6 ml/kg per hr in Dasyatis vs. 4 ml/kg per hr in Squalus.3.3. The chloride concentration of the rectal gland fluid is 770 mM in Dasyatis vs. 490 mM in Squalus.4.4. The rate of chloride secretion by the rectal gland is similar in the two species.
