Risk assessment of low coastal flooding hazard applied to Vougot Beach, Guisseny (Brittany)

Risk assessment of low coastal flooding hazard applied to Vougot Beach, Guisseny (Brittany)

Geomorphologie 2007(4): 319-334

This study presents a method that analyses and evaluates submersion hazard in a setting of dune erosion based on the example of Vougot beach in Guisseny (Finistere). Rates of dune retreat since 1950 were determined using aerial photograph analysis and DGPS measurements. A DGPS topographic survey of the entire area was also carried out in order to analyse shore and backshore morphology. Extreme water levels were statistically analysed, taking into account the effects on sea levels of surge and wave setup. Simulations based on extreme water levels and altimetry of the study area were performed in order to map submersible areas located landward of the dune and assess potential flooding hazard. Finally, prospective analysis was carried out to consider different scenarios of relative sea-level rise for the end of the 21st century.
