Seasonal distribution of tick parasites

Seasonal distribution of tick parasites

Jour Parasitol 24(4): 363-368

Between Apr. 2 and Nov. 22, 1935, 3115 nymphs and 4451 larvae were collected in Morrison Co., Minn., reared and observed for signs of parasitism. 3.3% of the nymphs and 7.4% of the larvae were infected. The parasitized immature rabbit ticks were found from Apr. 23 to Oct. 5, 1935. The incidence of parasitism was greatest during Aug. and Sept. Factors important in the parasitic involvement of immature ticks are descr. The parasite can apparently produce but 1 generation a yr. An average parasite emergence of 5.4 from the nymphs and 2.1 from the larvae was secured. The sex ratio of parasites emerging from seeds is approx. 1:1, the ratio of [female][female] to [male][male] among parasites emerging from nymphs is 5:1. The effect of I. texanus as a biological factor among the ticks on the area studied does not appear to be of great significance.
