Status of house sparrow Passer domesticus in the Agricultural habitat

Status of house sparrow Passer domesticus in the Agricultural habitat

Environment and Ecology Kalyani ember; 24(3): 490-495

Concerned over the decline in population of House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) and in the absence of any earlier available information regarding its status, a survey of rural residential area and field area of 94 villages falling under 15 districts was conducted during 2003-2004 to determine the existing status of House Sparrow. Survey revealed the occurrence of House sparrow in 35 out of 50 villages and 41 out of 44 villages covered during 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. No improvement in population except for some improvement in distribution of House Sparrow was observed in 2004-05 as compared to 2003-04. Relatively more abundance of House Sparrow was recorded in traditional > semi traditional > modem villages. For perching and roosting the sparrow preferred mainly thorny or dense foliate trees/bushes or plants. Loss of natural habitat due to ouster of this species as a result of modernization, prevailing architect of premises, public intolerance owing to its nuisance problem, its inability to adopt to breeding in open and its direct exposure to natural predation were found to be the limiting factors for survival/existence of this species. Emergence of another species namely the Brown rock chat (Cercomela fusca), with most similarities in habits and habitat with House Sparrow however with wide adaptability for nesting and breeding, has corresponded with the decline of House Sparrow.
