The Tangential Organization Of The Visual Cortex

Golgi preparations of rat, cat and monkey visual cortex were studied on sections cut in the plane of the "cortical retina" i.e. tangential to the pial surface. Thus visualized the dendritic trees of pyramidal cells are circular or elongated in shape. The majority of the dendritic fields of stellate cells are elongated and tend to be orientated mainly towards the "vertical" axis of the cortical retina. Reduced silver preparations of cat visual cortex cut in the same plane showed that approximately twice as many nerve processes, axons and/or dendrites, are orientated within a 30 degree angle bisected by the antero-posterior axis of the gyrus lateralis (vertical axis of vision) as in any obliquely orientated angle of the same size except in layer m where they are randomly orientated. Coding of visual signals permitting detection of lines and their orientation may depend upon the described dendritic fields and axonal orientation.
