The taxonomic position of three common Chilean frogs

The taxonomic position of three common Chilean frogs

Herpetologica 18(3): 195-203

The authors review the taxonomic nomenclature concerning Calyptocephalella gayi, Bufo spinulosus and Pleurodema bibroni. The revision shows in each case the priority of older names. Calyptocephalella gayi was preceded by Lacerta caudiverbera L., the name based on the description of the tadpole; the other two species were preceded by Bufo arunco and Bufo thaul, respectively. Taxonomic considerations are discussed. The authors recommend the maintenance of the long-established names on the basis of usage.
