The teeth of Plecostomus, an armored catfish

The teeth of Plecostomus, an armored catfish

Copeia (4): 161-163

In Plecostomus (Loricariidae, S. Amer.) the mandibles and premaxillae form deep troughs occupied by the developing teeth closely packed, 20-25 rows deep. The entire series is present in cross section from buds to complete teeth. Each tooth is a slender cylinder of dentine, S-shaped when functional, and breaks off easily, to be replaced by the next below. There is no enamel.
