Rhineland-Palatinate (SW-Germany), in spite of being located at the border of the range of the midwife toad, supports considerable populations of the species. It can be found in almost every natural unit of the state and prefers colline regions with extended woodland and quarries. In the southeast along the Rhine river the midwife toad reaches the border of its range. In this area the population density has declined and the range contracted 38 % since 1979. The conservation status of the species is "endangered". Important conservation measures are the management of quarrying and of quarry recultivation as well as the installation of sustainable forestry.
