In this study we present the results of a limnological survey of the Consuelo and Warany regions of the Pastaza River, Ecuador, conducted over the period of 14 - 22 July 1999. A rapid assessment of general water quality and characteristics, benthic macroinvertebrates, and zooplankton communities for 17 sampling sites located within the two broad ecoregions is presented herein. In general, waters in both the Consuelo and Warany regions of the Pastaza River of Ecuador ranged from slightly acidic to moderately basic. The waters in both regions were generally well oxygenated (except for isolated pools and dead arms) and conductivity was usually moderate. Zooplankton and macroinvertebrate diversity and abundances were generally low throughout the region, although macroinvertebrate (aquatic insect) diversity and abundance was comparatively high in the Najempaim River. These increases in diversity and abundance appear to be correlated with greater habitat heterogeneity in this tributary of the Pastaza River. In general, waters in the region were found to be in good condition, and very few sites were sampled that were highly disturbed or degraded.
