I. The studies sought to correlate mitotic-index data of various cells and tissues of fish embryo with developmental processes and with differentiation. In the 1st paper are discussed: relation of mitosis to growth and differentiation; use of the mitotic rate as one method for the analysis of differentiation; meaning of the mitotic index, its calculation, previous studies involving it, and its value for recognizing localized centers of developmental activity.
