Bacteriological diagnosis of swine erysipelas

The bacillus of swine erysipelas produces a postmortem infection in all animal tissues, as experimentally shown by the author. Therefore diagnosis of ante-mortem infection by the bacillus of Pasteur and Thuillier should be based upon the finding of the phagocytized bacillus in direct smears of sections of the kidney, since this organism has an affinity for the phagocytic cell and is selective for the renal tissue.
