Behavior of iodide131 in guinea pigs and of I131 rabbit globulin in guinea pigs and rabbits

Behavior of iodide131 in guinea pigs and of I131 rabbit globulin in guinea pigs and rabbits

American Journal of Physiology 172(3): 565-574

The behavior of iodide131 in guinea pigs as studied by excreta, tissue and serum radioactivity is markedly dissimilar to that found after admn. of I131-trace-iodinated rabbit globulin in guinea pigs and rabbits. The rate of loss of I131-rabbit-globulin from the serum after 24 hrs. is 0.64%/hour in the guinea pig and 0.46%/hr. in the rabbit. The rate of loss of radioactivity from the serum of guinea pigs and rabbits receiving I131-labelled rabbit globulin after 24 hrs. is identical to the loss of I131 from the animal by excretion. Following admn. of the I131 -protein the radioactivity in the liver, kidney and spleen can be accounted for by the I131 contained within the plasma of the tissue. No significant cellular localization of radioactivity was found except for the thyroid. After 24 hrs. the radioactivity administered as an I131 protein can be quantitatively accounted for by the I131 in the "globulin" space, thyroid and excreta.
