Beta-propiolactone as sterilizing agent in collection of bone homo- and heterotransplants

At the Laboratory of Tissue Preservation of the NovosibirskInstitue of Traumatology and Orthopaedics the authors exposed to sterilization homo- and heterografts obtained under sterile conditions from 45 cadavers. By this method 767 various preparations have been collected. The bacteriological assay failed to disclose any growth of microorganisms after sterilization. The use of 130 bone homo- and 15 heterografts in 107 patients with various diseases of the locomotor apparatus in all the cases was followed by positive results. The complications which were observed in 10 operated patients such as superficial wound suppuration had no influence of the favorable outcome of bone plasty. The clinical, laboratory and roentgenographic data failed to disclose any undesirable effect of beta-propiolactone on the recipient's organism.
