Penicillium chrysogenum strains No.-194, -369 and -136 utilized lactose at the same rate. Accumulation of glucose and galactose in the culture fluid occurred only with poor growth. The rate of glucose and sucrose utilization by these strains was very high, in which case penicillin production phase was markedly reduced. Although strain No.-136 utilized sucrose slower than the other 2 strains, it synthesized the same amounts of the antibiotic as on the lactose medium.
