Meadow red clover (Trifolium pratense perenne) is a var. which varies greatly in a very great number of characteristics and is distinguished from the field red clover by the greater duration of life. Furthermore, many individual plants are characterized by short or medium-length corolla tubes. Many plants, however, have a large proportion of stems and flowers but little foliage. It seems important, therefore, to improve the meadow red clover by selection. As this clover var. is used in meadows, it seemed proper to carry out the selection in a mixture with grasses. The examined strains then can be cultivated and increased in pure culture in the field, but care must be taken that in this augmentation in the field over a period of many yrs., no reduction of variability arises. To investigate culture conditions, meadow red clover was sown alone and mixed with grasses (Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis, Arrkenatherum elatius and a mixture of all 3 grasses). It was possible to obtain seeds from meadow red clover from the first reaping, and in field cultures. Seed production of cultivated clover alone is the best, but seed production of clover mixed with all 3 grasses is almost as good. Seed harvest is greatly decreased when the red clover is grown along with one grass sp.
