By greatly increasing the times of fixation and impregnation (from days to months), the Bielchowsky method was successfully applied to uro-dele tissues, to determine the first embryological appearance of neurofibrils. These appear first as granules, changing to fibers, and are thought to indicate functional activity. The order of the development of the cranial ganglia was determined: lateral line nerves first, then general sensory nerves and finally the visceral sensory nerves, before the rest of the system. In reflex arcs of the orbit and of the heart, sensory nerves differentiated before motor nerves. The determining factors are, for the author, peripheral stimuli. Changes in form of the ectoderm may cause local movements of tissue fluids resulting in the development of fibrils in sensory nerve cells; motor nerves differentiate only after the muscles they control are actually functioning.
