Characteristic features of the carrier state in experimental diphtheria of the eye caused by C. diphtheria in association with pathogenic cocci. I. Dynamics of isolation of diphtheria, pseudo-diphtheria bacteria and diphtheroids

Characteristic features of the carrier state in experimental diphtheria of the eye caused by C. diphtheria in association with pathogenic cocci. I. Dynamics of isolation of diphtheria, pseudo-diphtheria bacteria and diphtheroids

Three series of experiments were staged on 120 guinea pigs. Eye application according to Uthoff-Bessau was used for induction of diphtheria. Strains of diphtheria bacilli (372) and of pseudo-diphtheria bacteria and diphtheria (295) were isolated from the infected animals. In experimental model of diphtheria carrier caused by toxigenic and atoxigenic diphtheria bacilli in association with pathogenic cocci (staphylococci and streptococci) the periods of diphtheria bacteria isolation were prolonged 1.5-2 times (in case of a toxigenic strain) and 2.5-4 times (in case of an atoxigenic strain) as compared to the isolation periods in control animals. Along with isolation of diphtheria bacteria, pseudo-diphtheria bacilli and diphtheroids were constantly isolated from the animals. It was possible to isolate the microbes from the animals beginning from the 21st day after infection with the pure diphtheria bacteria culture and considerably earlier[long dash]from the 7th-14th day after combined infection with diphtheria bacteria, staphylococci and streptococci. Results indicate that the coccal flora plays a definite role in the pathogenesis of the diphtheria carrier state in experimental conditions.
