Characteristics of Brucella isolated in the USSR. II. Comparative virulence of the different bio-topes of Brucella melttensis, Brucella abortus, and Brucella suis

Characteristics of Brucella isolated in the USSR. II. Comparative virulence of the different bio-topes of Brucella melttensis, Brucella abortus, and Brucella suis

Zh Mikrobiol Epidemiol Immunobiol 44(2): 66-70

A study was made of a comparative virulence of various Brucella biotypes, belonging to the same species, and of the same biotypes within 1 species, isolated from various animals and man in the foci with various epizootic characteristics. A total of 74 strains were studied. The majority of cultures of all 3 B. melitensis biotypes (irrespective of species of the animal from which they were isolated and of the epizoo-tologic characteristics of the farm) were highly virulent for guinea pigs. The virulence of various B. abortus biotypes differed. The majority of the cultures of biotypeTwere of low virulence. Cultures of biotypes 3, 6, 7 and 9 isolated from cow, sheep and man, possessed a considerably higher virulence, approaching that of the melitensis species cultures. The virulence of B. suis cultures isolated from hogs, especially in hog farms, was higher than that of cultures isolated from man and cows.
