The influence of different amounts of N, P, and K fertilizers on the accumulation of total P and orthophosphate P in wheat grain was studied. The Yugoslav variety Novosadska 1439 and the Italian high-yield variety San Pastore were used. The amount of total P in the grain averaged 805.1-976.5 mg% P2O5 in San Pastore and 621.6-975.0 mg% P2O5 in Novosadska. With constant amounts of 2 fertilizers and varying amounts of the 3rd, the accumulation of total P in San Pastore was as follows with varying amounts of N, 908.3-948.6; P, 805.1-976.5; and K,: 865.7-924.4 mg% P2O5. In the variety Novosadska the corresponding ranges were: 824.6-956.3; 680.3-937.4; and 723.4-864.5. Orthophosphate P in the grain varied between 36.2-54.0 in San Pastore and 36.0-48.6 mg% P2O5 in Novosadska. In controls the level of orthophosphate P was 32 mg% P2O5 in Novosadska. While only increasing amounts of P fertilizer had a definitely regular influence on the accumulation of total P, increasing amounts of P and K fertilizers caused a slight increase of orthophosphate P in San Pastore. An average of 5% of the total P was orthophosphate P in both varieties. The small amount of orthophosphate in comparison to the amount of total P in both varieties of wheat, even with mineral fertilisers, suggests that orthophosphate is not an accumulative form of P in wheat grain.
