Chromosome studies in Fritillaria, III. Chiasma formation and chromosome pairing in Fritillaria imperialis

Chromosome studies in Fritillaria, III. Chiasma formation and chromosome pairing in Fritillaria imperialis

Cytologia tokyo 2(1): 37-55

Clones of F. imperialis vary in the frequency of chiasma formation at meiosis; the frequency of pairing of new fragment chromosomes is proportional to frequency of chiasma formation. All associations observed therefore, including end to end association, depend upon the formation of chiasmata among the associated chromatids at prophase. Without chiasmata there would be no pairing. Chromosomes have no more affinity for one another at metaphase of meiosis than at metaphase of mitosis.
