Chronic Hemolysis Associated With Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency

Chronic Hemolysis Associated With Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency

Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine 63: 1002-1009

A chronic state of increased hemolysis was found in 4 adults with G-6-PD deficiency in the red cells. Two patients had acute hemolytic events following infection and ingestion of sulfonamides. The remaining 2 had mild fluctuating jaundice and a positive history of hemolytic episodes. Investigations carried out during asymptomatic periods revealed that the half-life of the red cells was markedly decreased, ranging from 6.5 to 16 days. Anemia was not present at the time of investigation. It is suggested that the patients described comprise a distinct entity within the group of subjects with G-6-PD deficiency.
