Climates prevailing in the yellow-gray earth and yellow-brown earth zones in New Zealand

The profile characteristics and properties of New Zealand yellow-gray and yellow-brown earths are described. Of the 4 climate classifications discussed, Thornthwaite's "rational" classification gave the best differentiation between soil groups on the basis of moisture status. It also gave the best indication of seasonal variation on the basis of the number of months with a low runoff and the aridity index. The other classifications discussed are the Meyer ratio, Prescott's index and Thornthwaite's empirical classification. According to Thornthwaite's rational classification, it is quantitatively shown that thermal efficiency is similar for both soil groups, yellow-gray earths are found under much drier conditions than are yellow-brown earths, effective leaching is lower for yellow-gray earths, and yellow-gray earths have much longer droughty seasons.
