The isolation of 5 crystalline substances (A1, A2, A3, A4, and A5) from the leaves of W. somnifera is described. Their antibacterial spectra were investigated. A1, A2, A3, and (to a lesser extent) A4 and A5 were effective against aerobic bacilli. A1 and A2 had also a bacteriostatic effect on strains of Staphylococcus aureus. None of these substances was active against Gram-negative bacteria and anaerobic bacilli.
