Comparative investigations on atypische Huehnerpest and the Newcastle disease

Zentralblatt fuer Bakteriologie, Abt. 1, Originale 154(6/7): 161-164

Adult chickens and baby chicks were experimentally infected with the "California" strain of the Newcastle virus (NV) of the Bureau of Animal Industry, Washington, D. C, and the "Becker" strain of the "atypische Huehnerpest" virus (AHPV), to compare their clinical and immunological effect. In the AHPV infection after an incubation time of 3 days, the animals became weak, somnolent, cyanotic, dyspaneic, and diarrheic. However, they kept on their feet and had no cramps. All died within 3 additional days. At autopsy they gave the picture of septicemia with hemorrhage in the mucous membranes. The trachea was edematous and covered with mucus. In the exptl. NV disease, after incubation time of 3-4 days, the animals suddenly dropped down with convulsions, refused their feed, and most of them died after 3-4 days after the onset of the cramps with signs of central nervous system disturbances. At autopsy little or no pathological change was found. Three of the sick animals recovered and 15 other animals infected with NV showed no clinical signs of disease. All these 18 NV chickens were found immune against a challenge with AHPV. The reciprocal expt. could not be performed because no AHPV chicken survived. The author concludes that AHP is predominantly a septicemic disease while NV is mainly neuro-tropic. The virus of AHP is found post-mortem in all organs while the NV frequently could not be demonstrated post mortem in liver, spleen and even in the brain. In spite of these pathological and clinical differences, AHPV and NV seem to have a close antigenic relationship.
