Compensatory hypertrophy of the mammary gland in the guinea pig following the removal of the right mammary gland

Compensatory hypertrophy of the mammary gland in the guinea pig following the removal of the right mammary gland

Byul Eksp Biol Med 59(3): 97-100

The right-side mammary gland was extirpated in 39 guinea pigs. The experimental and control animals were killed on the 5th, 10th, 20th and 70th day after the operation, as well as at different stages of pregnancy and lactation. It was found that compensatory hypertrophy of the mammary glands in guinea pigs does not occur immediately after the excision of the paired organ, but manifests itself in the most intensive periods of reconstruction of this organ, at the end of pregnancy and in the lactation period. Compensatory hypertrophy in guinea pigs is also manifested by increase in weight of the remaining gland, hypertrophy of mammary alveoli and increase mitotic activity of the epithelium of the alveoli, particularly at the end of pregnancy and beginning of lactation.
