Vitellogenesis occurs in 2 phases. The 1st phase begins at hatching and lasts several months during which time the primordial yolk, comprising 1/20 of the total reserves, is built up in the cytoplasm. During the 2d and rapid, phase when successive layers of white and yellow yolk are deposited, the oocyte appears relatively passive. Mitochondria, ergastoplasm, and Golgi apparatus diminish; the blood brings phospholipids and vitellines from the liver, fats and proteins from the intestine.
