The 1st part of the report reviews data from the experiences of other countries, describing characteristics of the plant which make it such a serious pest, and listing various methods of control which have been used (cultural, biological and chemical, emphasizing the latter). Studies on the plant in Venezuela are then reported. In recent infestations, the majority of the tubercles of the plant are found in the upper soil layer 0-20 cm in depth. Activities in preparing the soil, if they are carried out during the rainy season, increase the plant population. The use of 2,4-D gives some control if applied superficially and injected at the same time. But recuperation of the plant after treatment makes this system impractical. The use of CMU, TCA, dalapon, Weedazol and mixtures of the last 2 do not efficiently control the weed over a long period. Only EPTC, incorporated into the soil with a rototiller, keeps the area clean for 3 months or more, when applied at the rate of 7.5 kg or more/ha, during the dry season. Carrots and alfalfa, if planted 3 weeks after treatment are not harmed by the herbicide, but sesame and cotton are damaged. Corn will not be harmed if planted 4 weeks after treatment, but will be damaged by doses of 10 and 20 kg/ha.
