Copper and manganese content in various segments of tubular bones of the human fetuses

Studies were carried out of the tubular bones of fetuses obtained at various periods of intrauterine life (3 weeks, 4,5 weeks, 7 weeks. 12[long dash]13 weeks, 22-23 weeks, 25-26 weeks and 32 weeks). The content of microelements[long dash]Cu and Mn was studied separately in the epiphysary, metaphysary and diaphysary segments of the upper and lower extremities. The spectrographic analysis after the method of Belous and Skoblin (1963) included the humerus, forearm bones, femur and tibia. In the overwhelming majority of cases, the average content of microelements was obtained from 3-fold tests, and in separate cases from 5 tests. A total of 305 bone tissue tests were investigated. The method of mathematical statistics was employed for figure processing. The study of dynamics of Cu and Mn level by periods shows that during the period from 3 to 7 weeks, due to enhanced vascularization, reconstruction of chondral callus, the Cu and Mn level in fetal bones increases and then gradually drops. It would appear, that the high content of microelements in fetal tubular bones will permit the use of these bones as biogenic stimulators in bone plastic operations.
