Cotton yield and quality losses resulting from various size populations of bollworms

Relatively low infestations of the bollworm (Heliothis zea) caused sizable reductions in the yield of cotton. When an average of only 3.6% of the bolls were damaged, losses of 627 pounds of seed cotton per acre occurred. Losses of more than 800 pounds of seed cotton per acre occurred when approximately 10% of the bolls were infested. Only slight reductions in the quality of cotton occurred. Results, under conditions of this study, indicate that infestations of 8 to 10 larvae per 100 plants or damaged boll counts of 3% or greater are sufficient to cause sizable reductions in the yield of cotton.
