As earlier reported, a triploid was found in F2 of the cross Galeopsis pubescens X G. speciosa; the triploid with pollen from pubescens gave a tetraploid (2n = 32) plant with good fertility and morphologically undistinguishable from pure G. tetrahit. It behaved like a pure tetrahit also in genetic and cyto-logical respects and was named "Artificial tetrahit" (A.T.). Hence it was suggested that the natural G. tetrahit represents a synthesis of speciosa and pubescens genomes. The present paper deals with genetic and cytological studies on A.T. Selfing gave a variable I1, in accordance with the constitution of the mother plant; two thirds of I1 could by no morphological criteria be distinguished from G. tetrahit. Pollen fertility in I1 was variable, but a large number of plants had better fertility than the mother plant. Crosses of A.T. with G. tetrahit gave a normally developed F1, typically tetrahit; some were completely fertile, others partially sterile. Hybrids with G. bifida were vigorous and more sterile than the hybrids with G. tetrahit. Most of the I1 plants had the normal chromosome number (32), a few were trisomics (2n = 33). At the reduction division usually 16 bivalents were found; sometimes non-conjunction was seen. Hybrids of G. tetrahit with A.T. showed good pairing. This case is compared with other cases of allopolyploidy. The study confirms the earlier conclusions concerning A.T. and substantiates the hypothesis that G. tetrahit represents a synthesis of G. pubescens and G. speciosa genomes.
