Diseases affecting salmon, sea-trout and coarse fish and characterized by the occurrence of skin lesions have been recognized for some time in the rivers of England, Scotland and Ireland. During 1966 there were epidemics in parts of Ireland as well as Cumberland, Lancashire and southern counties of England. The British and Irish governments intervened to control the movement of live fish and eggs from infected areas, and a program of research was begun to identify the causative organisms and the nature of the diseases.
