De Vogels van Curacao, Aruba en Bonaire

De Vogels van Curacao, Aruba en Bonaire

Limosa 21(1): 1-9

N.-w. Curacao and Bonaire are comparatively rich in birdlife; Aruba is poor. The total number of observed birds on these 3 islands amounts 95 spp. and one subsp. Among them are about 40 residents. Owing to the proximity of S. America the neotropical elements dominates the avifauna. The remaining 55 spp. are migrants or stragglers of N. American origin. In the past the Leeward group must have been inhabited by great colonies of seabirds but nowadays they do not breed there to a great extent. Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) had breeding colonies on Bonaire but in 1944 they were frightened away by members of the U. S. Army and it is still uncertain whether they will eventually'return to their nesting grounds.
