The leech (Hirudo medicinalis) is still cultured for medicinal purposes and Hungarian farmers have a well developed leech industry. Although blood-letting is little practiced, leeches are the source of hirudin (an anti-coagulant of blood) which is used in medicine where there are threats of emboli or thrombosis. A complete discussion of leech anatomy and reproduction is given, in addition to methods of culture and protection from enemies and disease.
