Detection of sorbitol in the gastrointestinal contents of albino rats
By means of a model expt. a method for chromato-graphic differentiation of sorbitol (I) and glucose in BuOH-EtOH-H2O has been described. The addn. of yeast permits the detn. of I without difficulties because I is not utilized by the yeast. The paper-chromato-graphic investigation of the gastrointestinal contents of the rats has confirmed that sucrose and its components are absorbed more rapidly than I. This effect is probably related to the vitamin B-sparing action of I.
