The technique for demonstration of sideromonocytes is reevaluated and a modification of Hirato's Na-nitrate method is described in detail. There were 27 cases; 5 with established diagnosis, 12 suspected cases, and 10 latent carriers. It is concluded that sideromonocytes are present in every clinical case of this disease and postclinical latent stage carriers may often show sideromonocytes. The technique is quite time-consuming (3 hours for every examination) and therefore is not appropriate for routine laboratory blood examinations.
