Distribution and occurrence of the falcons in Denmark. III. The lesser kestrel, the kestrel, and the American kestrel

Dansk Ornithol For Tidsskr 47(2): 104-122

The lesser kestrel (F. n. naumanni) is a rare visitor in Denmark. There are only 2 records, in 1944 and 1945. The kestrel (F. t. tinnunculus) was a common breeder up to 1930, but has been decreasing in nos. all during this century. In the last 20 yrs. it is more local, but still breeds in most parts of Denmark. It is common as a passage migrant, but not so abundantly as before. The autumn migration begins at the end of July, but the majority come in Sept. and the migration ends about the middle of Oct. The spring migration occurs from the end of March to the beginning of May. There is only 1 record of an American kestrel (F. s. sparverius), in 1901.
