Dynamics of auxins in germinating tomato seeds

The content of free and bound growth substances in ether extracts of dry and germinating tomato seeds was investigated by paper chromatography applying a biological test with slices of wheat coleop-tiles. In dry seeds the content of stimulator was extremely low, while the inhibitor content was high. Within a 96-hour period of germination, the content of free auxins had 2 maxima: at 12 and 72 hours from the moment of moistening the seeds; the maximal quantity of bound auxin was found at 24 hours. A marked decrease in the content of inhibitors and an increase in the content of stimulators in the 1st 12 hours of swelling of the seeds in the absence of bound auxins in dry seeds gives a basis for assuming that the inhibitors contained in the dry seeds are transformed into stimulators in the process of germination. The work was carried out at the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (Kiev).
