Ecology, breeding habits and young stages of Crenichthys baileyi, a cyprinodont fish of Nevada

Ecology, breeding habits and young stages of Crenichthys baileyi, a cyprinodont fish of Nevada

Copeia (1): 56-61

The fish, collected in the warm-spring headwaters of the Moapa R. in s.-w. Nev., lives at a temp. of 90[degree]F, in association with Moapa coriacea, Gambusia a. affinis and Gila robusta. Two mollusks, Tryonia clathrata and Amnicola microccus, were taken in association with the aquatic plant Eleocharis acicularis. Spawning took place in a 15 gal. aquarium planted with standard aquarium plants and maintained at 90[degree]F. The breeding fish were conditioned on Tubifex, Daphnia and prepared fish food. One egg was extruded at a time until approximately 17 were scattered through the plants. The act of copulation took about 1 sec. The newly hatched young stages (including prolarval, post larval, juvenile, and young of 17.7 mm. std. length) were fed on infusoria followed by Daphnia. Measurements were taken by means of a mechanical stage.
