Effect of ambient water temperature, alcohol, and certain endocrine products on survival from drowning in rats and mice

American Journal of Physiology 169(1): 108-110

Rats and mice were submerged under water and survival time detd. by the last gasp. At 3 water temps., survival was inversely proportional to temp., being longest at 4[degree] c and shortest at 45[degree] C. Survival to drowning was prolonged by ethyl alcohol and vasopressin and shortened by insulin and epinephrin. The avg. survival time of mice at 25[degree] C was 61.9 sec. and of rats at the same temp. was 105 sec. The greatest decrease in survival was with insulin which was -25.8%.
