A study was conducted to determine whether or not it is possible to induce an impaired carbohydrate tolerance in adolescent boys by artificially increasing plasma free fatty acid by means of intravenous fat infusions. The results, while clearly indicating a carbohydrate intolerance (suggesting inhibition of glycolysis) did not demonstrate a relationship between increased free fatty acid level per se and insulin release.
