Effect of mutated background on mutant expression in Arachis hypogaea L

Effect of mutated background on mutant expression in Arachis hypogaea L

Crop Sci 4(1): 73-78

Tested was the background genotype hypothesis that variation in expressivity within distinctive morphological X-ray peanut mutants of a common class resulted from the simultaneously mutated background genotype. Five X-ray induced morphological mutants descending from a uniform peanut variety were hybridized inter se in the X7 generation. Each mutant was crossed to descendants of the original control. Mutant F2 plants of a common class extracted from mutant x mutant and from mutant x control families were compared in a randomized block design in the F3 generation. Differences among and within families constituted a test of the background genotype hypothesis. Except in a few instances, statistically significant differences among and within F2 families were obtained for seven characters in separate tests with mutants Cup and Hex. Except for two characters, significant differences within F2 families were obtained with the mutant Corduroy. The hypothesis was further substantiated by significant differences in leaflet length among control-types extracted from mutant x control families. Results indicated breeding progress may be achieved through the use of induced mutations having small effects even with backgrounds associated with deleterious mutants.
