Effect of phosphorus on the biosynthesis of oleandomycin

The effect of various concentrations of phosphorus on oleandomycin biosynthesis, mycelium growth, nutrient consumption and accumulation of pyruvic acid in cultures of Actinomyces antibioticus, strain 1790, grown on 4 medium variantB was studied. The optimal concentration of phosphorus for the biosynthesis of oleandomycin was found to range from 15 to 25 mg%, depending on the medium composition. An excess of phosphorus (40 mg%) remained partially not utilized up to the end of the process and suppressed the oleandomycin biosynthesis by 13.8 to 72% depending on the medium composition. When the strain was grown on complex media, an excess of phosphorus decreased the biomass weight, accelerated the utilization of glucose and lowered the medium reaction. Accumulation of pyruvic acid depended on the composition of the medium. An excess of phosphorus resulted in a decreased accumulation of pyruvic acid in complex media and its increased accumulation in synthetic media.
