Effect of pre-emergence rainfall on population size in tobacco in the tobacco hornworm



J Econ Entomol 59(5): 1199-1200



Information based on 6 years' light-trap catch data from Florence, S. C., indicates a correlation of r = 0.98 between the percent of total annual catch of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (Johannson), captured in the 1st month and total rainfall between March 1 and May 15. The equation of the fitted regression is Y = 24.07-1.56X. When this equation was applied to the data of 2 subsequent years, their total catch was predicted with errors of 3.6% and 12.6%, respectively.
