Effect of preliminary intravarietal crossing on the combining ability of durum wheat and soft wheat

The use of intervarietal hybrids of the first generation markedly affects the results of crossing between Tritieum durum (durum) and T. vulgare (soft wheat). When intervarietal hybrids are used as parental forms the combining ability of the durum wheat with the soft one is much superior than upon crossing of homozygous pure strains of these wheats. This method of overcoming incompatibility may therefore be recommended for practical use in distant hybridization of wheats.
