Effect of spacing on some economic characters in cotton

Effect of spacing on some economic characters in cotton

Madras Dept Agric Yr Bk 1928: 32-40

The total output of flowers in widely-spaced plants is 5 times as great as that in closely spaced plants. Narrow spacing hastens flowering. The maturation period remains the same in both spacings. Lint length does not seem to be affected by difference in spacing. There is a wider range of variation in length among field sown plants, but it is not significant. There is no significantly higher ginning percentage than from those sown as a field crop. As there is no significant difference between the 2 spacings under consideration as regards the more important economic characters, viz., lint length, lint weight, and seed weight, the breeder can safely assume that the behavior of his cultures will not be widely different, under field conditions, from that manifested in his pedigree plots.
