Effective mixtures of trace elements for the young of long-horned cattle

An experiment was performed on 29 one-month old calves to determine the effects of a supplement containing trace elements. The animals were divided into a control group and 2 experimental groups. The food for all groups was identical. Calves in the experimental group 1 received the normal amount of a mineral supplement once a day with their food, while those in group 2 received 50% more. The supplement contained 5-10mg CoCI2, 30-75mg CuSO4,5-30mgMnSO4,50-150mgFeSO4, and 1-6mgKI, the amount depending upon the age. During the stabling period of the first year the average daily weight gain was 564g for controls, 574g for group 1, and 620g for group 2. In the second year of the experiment the corresponding values were 372g, 462g, and 470g, respectively. Calves in the experimental groups ate more food, had less trouble with digestive disorders, and had better appetites and more energy than the controls. Experiments performed on 6 calves (3 controls and 3 calves from group 2) at the age of 4 and 14-15 months showed that the N, K, and P balances were positive for all animals. However, calves from group 2 utilized 25-30% more protein than controls. K and P were utilized to almost the same extent by both groups. The mineral supplement caused a 70-100% increase in the vitamin B12 content and also in the butter-fat content of cow's milk. Hemoglobin in blood from calves of group 2 was 2-8% higher than that of the controls.
